Investment Logic Map
Overview
 
An Investment Logic Map (ILM) articulates visually and on a single page the logical story that underpins a proposed investment. The ILM’s focal point is about a clear and shared understanding of the problems that prompted a desire to invest in the first place. As such the ILM helps to avoid solutioneering and forms an important foundation for a robust business case.
 
The ILM:
  • Identifies the primary problems (and impact), and the best response to deliver the expected benefits
  • Establishes the strategic need and is developed before any decisions are made or solutions are generated
  • Is visually intuitive and only tells the important information
  • Is written in plain English so that a non-specialist can understand it and can form an opinion
  • Is created from a facilitated workshop with key stakeholders 
Why ILM?
 
Frequently, projects are founded on a predetermined solution or are simply incomplete to address the full extent of the problems. These investments started with a poor understanding of the problems and whether they are actually worth solving which is a major cause of investments failing to generate value.
 
Our clients find that the ILM shapes their thinking early one before a decision to invest is made and that it helps them to define the correct and full scope of changes and assets to be invested in.

The benefits of an ILM as a tool include:
  • Strategic approach - The ILM strengthens the strategic nature of the business case development, forcing the identification of benefits that are strategically aligned
  • New way of thinking - The ILM approach changes the way we think about investments. It shifts us from finding a solution to starting with a clear understanding of the problem and from funding a project to investing in delivering value
  • Stakeholder buy-in - Key stakeholders are active participants in the decision making process and collectively agree to a shared understanding of the need for investment
  • Avoids solutioneering - The ILM facilitated workshop forces the participants to think about the problems and strategic ways of solving them rather than discuss specific solutions too early
  • Communication tool - The ILM is an effective tool for communicating the intent of a proposed investment because it depicts the logic in plain language and is founded on common sense concepts
 
Delivering Value

We have a number of experienced and accredited ILM facilitators who collectively have produced a significant number of ILMs, across a wide variety of industries, ranging in investment size from $50,000 to $500 million.

Auckland Region -  Investment Logic Mapping (ILM) Accredited Facilitator
 
We are proud to announce that Jenny Coquilhat, one of our consultants, has become an accredited ILM facilitator.  Jenny is a seasoned facilitator who has developed many programme and project level ILMs for a wide range of organisations. 
 
She has recently been involved in piloting Treasury’s Better Business Case approach in the Auckland region by facilitating a programme level ILM and benefits workshops for a joint Auckland Council and Government’s Auckland Policy Office initiative to improve outcomes for 0-5 year olds in the Southern Initiative.
